Update 05: Character Concept Art

Art

Late September of 2020, we commissioned some character and creature concepts from a really fantastic artist I’d worked with in the past.

This image is one of the first Project_N related pieces of artwork, and it’s really inspired us during these first few months of development.

The artist captured a lot of character and charm in these initial sketches, and I still use them as a basis for comparison when looking at newer iterations and thinking through the overall direction.

Our goal is to create something that feels very rooted in traditional fantasy, and taps into the nostalgia I feel when I reflect back on the very first fantasy stories, illustrations, and games I immersed myself in (or watched the older kids/people play) as a kid.

We’re still iterating quite a bit on our art style, and I have no doubt that we’ll continue to see changes in this area, but this image really does capture something special — it’s very in line with our desire to be both serious and charming; fantastically realistic; simple, but emotionally evocative.

It’s amazing how much of an impact, a little bit of artwork can have on the overall process.

I love it!
